The Space
The Space
Mass. Mohair Plush Co. Office
c.1910
Building History:
This site was undeveloped before the 1840s, when various businesses were noted here, such as the Lowell City Stables and the Lowell Manufacturing Company. By 1896, a large brick industrial structure on the site was owned by Joseph A. Corem, and it was known as the Corem Block. Ten years later several brick and wood structures lined the canal, and the owner was listed as the Massachusetts Mohair Plush Company. By 1924 there were five- story brick buildings lining the canal.
The Mass. Mohair Plush Co. Office consists of two one-story wooden wings wrapped around a small two-story brick building. The taller of the two wings, which is the oldest, has projecting rafters supporting the overhanging eaves. The brick building was added later, appearing on the 1924 Lowell Atlas. The other wooden wing was added after 1924.
Preservation and Reuse:
The buildings were recently transformed into The Space, a rehearsal and recording facility for the performing arts. Part of that transformation included an extensive re-design of the interior of the facility to dampen sound leakage and enhance acoustics.
