Building History

This yellow brick and concrete metal-frame structure was built in 1922 to house Moller’s Department Store, a branch of a Boston-based home furnishings store.  The furniture store opened on October 31, 1922 to grand fanfare with an orchestra greeting its new customers to four floors of interesting displays.  Its merchandise continued decorating homes in greater Lowell for several decades.  More recently, the building served as the temporary location for the City’s Pollard Memorial Library while its historic library building underwent rehabilitation.

Preservation and Reuse

Acquired by a private developer in 2003, the building underwent rehabilitation for conversion into 24 residential condominiums.  Lowell Historic Board staff located the original 1920s plans for the building at the Massachusetts Archives.  This assisted the architects and developer in recreating the lost Art Deco details such as an entrance canopy, geometric window details, and center entrance location.  Also, missing decorative panel details and other damaged surface detail were replicated in fiberglass according to details found on the original architectural plans.
