Building History

Built in 1889, this brick three-story, metal-framed building sits on the corner of Middlesex and Marston Streets. This building is Queen Anne/ Neo-Classical Revival in style with red pressed brick laid in stretcher bond on the front and northerly façade and the rest in common brick laid in common bond.

The Appleton Company ran a boardinghouse on this site for about sixty years until part of the property was sold to George H. Marston in 1889.  Marston was a real estate developer and stockbroker who also served as president of the Lowell Board of Trade.

A notable tenant of the Marston Building was Costilla D. Smith, a photographer who was known as one of the few successful women photographers in the area. She was listed as a tenant in 1890-1896.

The building housed several businesses over the years. By 1975, Faber Liquors was the only occupant.

Preservation and Reuse

The Marston Building has recently been rehabilitated for new residential and commercial spaces. Work included new replica windows and the restoration and reconstruction of the historic storefronts.
