Building History
Historically known as the Davis & Sargent Building, the structure was built ca. 1880 in the Italianate style and originally contained three stories as evidenced by the ca. 1950 photograph shown above. The building was constructed of a brick front facade and rubble stone on its side and rear walls as well as a unique square smokestack. The Davis & Sargent Company was a manufacturer of lumber and boxes which supplied the textile industry in Lowell. The company was established in 1873 as a successor to a similar business established by Mr. Davis in 1852. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places through its inclusion in the Lowell National Historical Park & Preservation District.
Preservation and Reuse
After being vacant and shuttered for two years, Nokode Holdings LLC bought the property in 2006. The $3.5 million dollar project involved rehabilitating the building for use as the northern Massachusetts office of Nobis Engineering, Inc. The building was renovated using green building principles, which makes it one of only a few preservation projects in Massachusetts certified to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. This building is the very first LEED certified building in Lowell.
